[BATIK]
A specialty of Indonesia and Malaysia that is made using batik dyeing. In Japan, it is considered a type of sarasa.
Indonesian BATIK is characterized by the fact that patterns are drawn by hand or using stencils on cotton fabric, and that instead of applying dye directly to the fabric, they use a technique called resist dyeing, in which melted wax is applied to areas that should not be dyed before dyeing. Heated wax is poured into a tool called a "chanting" and the pattern is drawn. The areas that have been painted with wax will not dye, so after the fabric is dipped in the dye solution and dyed, the wax is washed off with hot water and the fabric is dried. This process is repeated to create complex patterns. Because it is a very labor-intensive manual technique, the fabric is considered expensive and valuable.
